TILTING? When to Step Away from the Table

Monday, August 31st, 2009

I can bet that you have heard the term TILT if you have been around the game of poker for some time. Basically being on TILT means that you aren’t thinking clearly or you are upset at something that occurred at the poker table. A few things that could set someone on TILT are :

1.       Taking a Bad Beat  – Getting your cash in the pot with the best hand only to be outdrawn by a  worse hand

2.       Being shown a Bluff – Sometimes after you fold your opponent will show his terrible hand which can trigger emotions of anger and frustration

3.       Drunk Players at the Table – Although it’s fun to play against people when they are drinking as they tend to make errors, listening to them yap away is enough to upset anyone

4.       Trash Talker at the Table – Some use this tactic to throw you off your game. They constantly berate you at the table hoping to get an edge and make you do something stupid to lose all of your chips. (I’m really not a big fan of this approach, but it is effective for some)

These are just a few examples of things that can put you TILT. At any point that you don’t feel like you are making good decisions then it’s probably for the best that you take a break. Poker is a game of incomplete information where we try to make the correct decisions. If you’re not thinking correctly and making bad decisions then you stand a good chance to lose a lot of money. Having the right “Poker State of Mind” is crucial to your long term poker success. Here are some other examples of things to avoid:

1.       You should not play if you are tired

2.       Don’t play if you are drinking or have been drinking

3.       Avoid watching TV while playing

4.       Don’t  answer emails or surf the web

It can sometimes feel like forever waiting for hands to play so we tend to do other things. If you find yourself getting bored and looking for things to do, my suggestion would be to play a few tables at the same time if you are playing on line. This way there is no time to get bored since there are more chances to have good  cards on multiple tables. You should probably take a break if you find your mind drifting or thinking of other things. Don’t worry, there will always be a game waiting for you tomorrow.

Moving Up The Poker Ladder

Monday, August 31st, 2009

There is always something poker related no matter where we turn these days. We hear all of the time of these young kids making crazy cash whether it’s on TV, in magazines or at a local bar.  You may have heard one of these stories and thought  to yourself, “I’m sick of playing my $5, $10 or $20 buy in levels. It’s time for me to start earning some real money.” Unfortunately this is why so many people fail playing poker. Even though they don’t have the proper poker bankroll and experience level, they want to move up way to fast.

SO HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN YOU CAN MOVE UP TO THE NEXT LEVEL?

The answer is really simple. Your poker bankroll will tell you.No I don’t mean your bankroll will actually talk to you, but if you are following strict bankroll requirements (I always recommend 2% of bankroll per buy in) then you know when it will be time to move up.  Here’s an example:

Let’s say you have a bankroll of $1000. $20 should be your buy in amount based on this. You should continue to playing these levels until you bankroll increases to $1500. Now you can increase to the thirty dollar games. If you remain successful just rinse and repeat.Go back to the $20 levels that you were playing if your bankroll ever drops below the $1500 mark. Contrary to what a lot of people think, moving down levels is not failing. You can continue to learn and improve until you eventually break through that level and beyond.

If you continue to follow this model and move up and down when you bankroll requires it you will virtually remove all possibilities of going broke. It will also let you know when you are ready to take on the challenge of the next buy in level. I’m sure you will be very pleased with the amounts of money that you can make once your game has improved and you have moved up to the higher games.

Basic Strategy for Blackjack – Great Advice Explained

Monday, August 31st, 2009

When you are a newbie to this card game you are best of to begin with the basic strategy for Blackjack and by obtaining a copy of a correct Blackjack strategy card, that you can have close to you when gambling online.

There are quite a few strategies for Blackjack used by casual players as well as pros. There are some techniques that you can use to find yourself either winning more often, or simply winning more. It is important that you have a good idea of the rules of Blackjack already, but take a look at some of the more common betting strategies.

Card counting is almost certainly the widest known tip, but you’ll find it hard to locate a casino which will let such a tactic be used. This method requires you to memorize the cards that have appeared, so that you can determine which cards are more likely to turn up. When you can anticipate what is coming you can alter your wagers to reflect the degree of risk.

There are no casinos that will allow you to keep track of that have left the deck. Having said that, if you are one of those rare people that can memorize 104 cards, why not give it a try! If you are unable to memorize all the cards, then you might give it a try with an online casino, maintaining a record of the cards that have been dealt.

Surprisingly, we find different game rules applied at different casinos, and this can greatly affect your odds of winning. A common rule change is that which allows for splitting a hand, and this can make a very big difference in how likely you are to win. Casinos that allow for splits are greatly preferred since, this gives you a much better opportunity for success.

Another rule which is found in most casinos requires the dealer to stand on 17, which can be an advantage to you. Your odds are greatly reduced if this rule is not in force. You need to be certain you educate yourself on varying rules so you are absolutely positive you have the best odds you can have.

But what about how to approach making your bets – are there things you can take into consideration when it comes to how and when to bet? There are wagering methods that you can use, and it makes good sense to choose one you like and stick with it for the best chance. You may have some exposure to the Martingale and Paroli systems, two of the most familiar.

Blackjack betting strategies vary widely, and this couple couldn’t be more different since they take totally different perspectives. If you lose a hand under Martingale, you bet double the amount on the next hand, you go back to your original wager when you win. As opposed to Martingale which has you double when you lose, the Paroli recommends increasing bets after winning hands instead. Paroli is focused on trying to take advantage of winning streaks and Martingale is focused on breaking losing streaks. Both systems have some flaws. If following Martingale a big bankroll is needed. If you start by betting $10 and then lose 7 hands in a row for a combined loss of $1270  you now need to bet $1280 on the 8. round! Paroli puts a much lesser stress on your bankroll. Starting with $10  and loosing 7 straight hands you will only have lost $70 total.

The Parlay system is also widely used and is, a rather more conservative version compared to the others. Parlay is based on gradually increasing your bet, recommending that whenever you win, the the follow on wager is the basic bet plus a percentage of the winning amount.

When playing Blackjack it also helps to have access to a scorecard or calculator which will calculate the odds. This is primarily just a system of keeping track of the cards left to be played, and narrows down the odds of other cards turning up. Getting a handle on the odds with comprehensive information can help you make strong moves, eliminating a good proportion of the risk and gamble.

Of course these Blackjack betting strategies will only work for online casinos. Notes or calculators would have you banned immediately from a live card game. Clearly online casinos provide you with a real advantage in terms of applying both betting and playing systems to full effect.

online poker tips

Most poker tournament decisions are routine, or at least you would like them to be. The truth is, even though numbers and common sense often indicate you should play a hand a certain way , there is much more to our personal make-up that complicates these strategies. In fact, we are programmed to reason using every fiber of our being. The skill then, is to manage the all of the data AND feelings you have about any particular hand and use poker tournament strategy.

Now even though I have often advised to leave your feelings and emotions out of the decision making process, that really isn’t quite right, or plausible. Without contradicting myself too much, there will always be part of your decision process fueled by intuition and emotion – and you know what? There is nothing wrong with that! The thing is, you must always fall back on the 10 second rule when making game critical decisions in poker tournaments. When you are faced with a big decision, just start counting to yourself, don’t ruch for the mouse button.

Important online poker tips might seem obvious, but if you thrust into action or respond without thinking, you will often circumvent deeper wisdom and better solutions. This is also where your intuition and instincts can better serve your objective because it gives you an opportunity to tune into what may be unique about this hand or this opponent. Yes, the 10 seconds can be used to determine your best possible odds and payout strategy, but it can also illuminate an obvious bad situation for you. When you start doing this regularly, you are going to have some key moments that you look back on and say, “Wow I made a great play there”. I recently did this at a final table in an SnG MTT on Full Tilt where I went on to win the tournament. Had I not dropped the hand, I would have finished out of the money as only 6 players got paid.

During those few precious moments use these online poker tips and start asking yourself things like:

What do my true instincts say?
What are the real odds of me having the best hand here?
Can I fold and still have enough left to out-play my opponents?
If I was watching this hand on TV, what would I recommend?
Is this positive EV?

Leave some of these questions on sticky-notes on your monitor when playing in tournaments. Even if you just mumble through a couple of these I guarantee that you will start winning money in online poker tournaments. The best poker professionals use these online poker tips and combine all of the information – including intuition and instinct to make profitable decisions.

What is Rake Back and Why Do You Need It?

Monday, August 31st, 2009

For those that haven’t heard of Rake Back let me explain how critical it is to your poker well being. For starters, what is the rake? Basically this is the amount of money that the poker rooms, either online or offline  keep as their cut for hosting the poker game. If you have ever sat down to play a tournament online and had to pay that extra little fee, that is the rake. The normal amount taken is 10 percent for SNG’s and MTT’s. Look at this example.

If you play a $10 SNG then usually you will have to pay $1 as the rake fee.  For a $30 MTT the rake would be $3 and so on. Now that you know what the rake is, you can probably guess what the term Rake Back means. The portion that the poker sites will give you for playing at their sites ranges from 27% to 100%.

What’s the reason the poker rooms offer this?

The costs of a regular land casino are much higher than online poker sites as you can probably imagine. Since their expenses are much less, these poker rooms can offer these incentive bonuses to encourage new customers to join their sites.

So how much can we get back?

To answer that question it all depends and how much you play, but let’s  look at an example. Let’s assume that you play 20 twenty dollar sit n go’s each week. The numbers would look something like this:

# of SNG’s :                        20
Rake Paid (Week): $40 ($2 x 20 SNG’s)
Rake Paid (Month): $160 (4 weeks X $40)
Rake Paid (Year):             $1,920 (12 months X $160)

Now if we use a typical Rake Back Deal of 30%, you would get back $576 over the course of a year. That’s pretty good since you would be playing these games anyways. Obviously if you play more or less then your numbers will look a little different from this example, but I’m sure you get the point. Most of the programs pay out once a month, but others are weekly and some daily. What’s great is that there is usually no minimum play requirements and they are FREE to join.

Basically you are getting paid for the games that you would be playing anyways. You are leaving money on the table if you are not using Rake Back.

Are You in the Right “Poker State of Mind”?

Monday, August 31st, 2009

I’m sure the word TILT is nothing that you haven’t heard before even if you are new to playing poker. In a nutshell, being on TILT means that you are no longer thinking clearly or that something occurred at the table that has made you mad. A few things that could set someone on TILT are :

1.       Taking a Bad Beat  – Getting your money in the pot with the best hand only to be outdrawn by a  worse hand

2.       Being shown a Bluff – Sometimes after you fold your opponent will show his terrible hand which can get you upset

3.       Drunk Players at the Poker Table – Although it’s fun to play against people when they are drinking as they tend to make errors, listening to them yap away is enough to upset anyone

4.       Trash Talker at the Table – This is a tactic some players use to get under your skin. They constantly berate you at the table hoping to get an edge and make you do something stupid to lose all of your chips. (I’m really not a big fan of this approach, but it is effective for some)

That was just a few examples of things that can put you TILT. Don’t be scared to walk away from the table if you find yourself TILTING. Poker is all about trying to make good decisions based on the incomplete information that we have in front of us. If you’re not thinking correctly and making bad decisions then you stand a good chance to lose a lot of money. If you want to have long term poker success then being in the critical “Poker State of Mind” is critical. Here are some other examples of things to avoid:

1.       Avoid playing if you are Tired

2.       If you are drinking or have been drinking you really shouldn’t play

3.       Don’t play if you want to watch TV

4.       Don’t  answer emails or surf the web

I know sometimes poker can be long in between hands to play so we tend to do other things. If you are an onine player and find yourself getting bored, my suggestion would be to play a few tables at the same time. This will increase your chances of getting good starting hands to play and eliminating boredom. If you still find yourself drifting then maybe you should just quit for the day. There will always be another poker game tomorrow so there is no need to worry.

The Next Poker Level – How Do You Know When You’re Ready?

Monday, August 31st, 2009

There is always something poker related no matter where we turn these days. Whether it’s in magazines,  on TV or at our local bars, we are constantly exposed to all of these young kids making obscene amounts of money playing poker.  You may have heard one of these stories and thought  to yourself, “I’m sick of playing my $5, $10 or $20 buy in levels. I want to start making some real cash.” Unfortunately this is why so many people fail playing poker. Even though they don’t have the proper poker bankroll and experience level, they want to move up way to fast.

SO HOW DO YOU KNOW YOU ARE READY FOR THE NEXT LEVEL?

It’s really a simple answer.

Until your bankroll has increased to $1500, then you should continue playing these games. Now you can increase to the thirty dollar games. If you remain successful just rinse and repeat.  If your bankroll drops back down under $1500 then move back down to the $20 levels. A lot of players think that if they move down levels that they are failing, but that is not the case. You can continue to improve your game and learn until you move through that level and beyond.

If you continue to follow this model and move up and down when you bankroll requires it you will virtually remove all possibilities of going broke. You will know when you are ready to move up to the next level as it will tell you. I’m sure you will be very pleased with the amounts of money that you can make once your game has improved and you have moved up to the higher levels.

MLB Picks – use a MLB baseball picks system to get the best win percentage

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Often I have looked at my email to find questions in regards to using a baseball picks program to turn out winning sports bets.  And is it absolutely necessary to discover a wagering software to win. The absolute truth is that gamblers that make use of a program to make regular wagers will have a better win rate than bettors who don’t.

I employ an online MLB baseball wagering system for MLB because I was ticked off about losing my own wagers day in and day out. The result is I actually win more than before with very little effort. So, of course, I absolutely recommend a MLB baseball picks system.

Recently, though, there has been professional level of baseball handicapping to buy for the non-professional bettor. When I heard about this I needed to check it out and give it a go. I was actually surprised to find out that I would receive daily picks to bet on.

Since I like to gamble on baseball at times heavily, such as multiple games in one day, I relished the extra picks. The end results have been absolutely fantastic. The picks haven’t sent me a losing wagerlosing game yet.

A pro handicapper can make you a winner immediately. The learning curve is instantly defeated. Unfortunately, this type of service does come with a price tag. I think that the price is definitely reasonable considering the cash won from just the first 7 baseball game picks.

To win money in baseball betting you need to have a bunch of winning game picks to bet  on. The idea is to win more often than you lose. Having lost my shirt, and a few other things I don’t need to disclcose publicly here, I can positively guarantee you that if you are betting in system units, you will need a string of winners to build up cash.

So, I recommend, if you are a newbie to betting on MLB baseball, that you find a baseball handicapping service and begin your winning streak today. Why do it on your own when you can get the strategy of a professional? Exactly!

Blackjack Strategies: Must Have Tricks Told

Monday, August 31st, 2009

If you are new to Blackjack you really must start with the basic strategy for Blackjack and also get a correct Blackjack strategy card, to keep close to you when playing online.

There are a number of Blackjack betting strategies used by both professionals and amateurs across the world. By following a few simple strategies you can often find yourself either winning more often, or simply winning more. Before working on learning more subtle strategies you need to make sure you know the rules of Blackjack.

Perhaps the most famous Blackjack strategy is the card counting technique, most casinos have banned this strategy. You can see how this technique could help you, because you are more likely to be able to anticipate what comes next. Card counting essentially helps you better work with the odds, helps you use the odds to your advantage.

There are no casinos that will allow you to keep track of that have left the deck. Having said that, if you are one of talented enough to keep mental track of a couple of decks of cards, why not give it a try! However, you can take advantage of card counting since internet Blackjack can’t stop you from making any notes.

Even though the broad rules for Blackjack are universal, you will find variations that can make a big difference in your chance of winning. An example of a rule that is important is whether or not you are allowed to split your hand. Being allowed to split can often make the difference between a slight loss and a comfortable win.

Another rule which is found in most casinos requires the dealer to stand on 17, which can be an advantage to you. Your odds are greatly reduced if this rule is not in force. Being aware of the variations in rules is one way to making sure you give yourself the best chance of winning.

Aside from any differences in specific rules, what strategies can you employ to help make better bets? There are several betting strategies, and you need to find one you like and remain consistent in using it. You will find a lot of different techniques but, probably the most widely adopted are the Martingale and Paroli systems.

As far as Blackjack betting strategies are concerned, Martingale and Paroli are widely different. Under one system, you a lost hand means you double the wager, and if you win you go back to the original bet. On the contrary, you double your bet on a win with Paroli, on a loss go back to the first bet. Paroli is all about trying to take advantage of winning streaks while the Martingale system is geared towards breaking losing streaks. Both systems have some flaws. When playing by Martingale you must have a lot of money to gamble with. If you start by betting $10 and go on to lose 7 hands back to back for a combined loss of $1270  you now need to bet $1280 on the eight round! Paroli requires a much smaller wallet. Beginning with $10  and loosing seven times in a row will only cost you $70.

The Parlay system is also a popular system but it is, a more cautious technique than some of the others. Using the Parlay technique you use a graduated approach by adding a proportional amount plus the original bet when you win.

As you place your bets you need to be absolutely sure you have considered the amounts correctly, and you will find that a Blackjack calculator can remove the guesswork. Clearly the best way of winning is to obtain as good an idea of the card combinations coming up as possible, and such calculating systems achieve this by working out those still left. Knowing this kind of information helps you to judge what action to take and how much to bet.

However, using calculation techniques won’t work in actual casinos. Actual casinos would certainly ban you for such techniques. Clearly online casinos provide you with a real advantage in terms of applying both betting and playing systems to full effect.

What is Rake Back and Why Do You Need It?

Monday, August 31st, 2009

For those of you  who are new to poker or just may not be aware of what Rake Back actually is I’m going to explain how  important it is to your poker bottom line. To start off, what is the rake? Basically this is the amount of money that the poker rooms, either online or offline  keep as their cut for hosting the poker game. The rake is basically that small fee that the poker sites charge to run the tournaments. A typical take for Sit N Go’s or Multi Table Tournaments is 10%. Look at this example.

Usually you will have to pay a $1 rake fee if you are playing a $10 game.  For a $30 MTT the rake would be $3 and so on. I’m sure by now you can probably guess what Rake Back is. Basically the payouts range from 27% to 100% just for playing poker at their poker rooms.

Why do the poker sites do this?

The costs of a regular land casino are much higher than online poker sites as you can probably imagine. Since their over head is far less, these sites can offer these types of cash back incentives to encourage customers to join and play at their site.

So how much can you expect to get back?

To answer that question it all depends and how much you play, but let’s  look at an example. Let’s assume that you play 20 twenty dollar sit n go’s each week. The numbers would look something like this:

# of SNG’s :                        20
Rake Paid (Week): $40 ($2 x 20 SNG’s)
Rake Paid (Month): $160 (4 weeks X $40)
Rake Paid (Year):             $1,920 (12 months X $160)

Now if we use a typical Rake Back Deal of 30%, you would get back $576 over the course of a year. That’s pretty awesome since you would be playing these games anyways. Your numbers may look different depending on the levels you play, but I’m sure you get the point. The majority of the sites will pay out each month, but there are some that pay out each week or even daily. The best part is that Rake Back offers are FREE to join and there are usually no minimum requirements that you have to play.

Basically it’s FREE money for doing something that you love anyways. If you aren’t using Rake Bake then you are leaving money at the poker table.
